Existing EPDM pond liner

Don’t rip it out. Coat over it.

For many pond owners, removing an existing EPDM liner means draining the water, relocating fish, removing rocks, plants and slate — then relevelling the earth underneath. PondPro 2000 goes directly over your existing liner. No removal. No mess. No guessing.

The alternative

Look at the work to replace a liner

The whole process is very time consuming. Applying PondPro takes a couple hours depending on the size of your pond.

  • Drain the entire pond

All water out before you can touch the liner

  • Pull up the liner

Then roll it up and dispose of it — not a small job

  • Relocate all fish

Find a temporary tank that keeps them safe during the job

  • Re-level the earth below

The ground settles — you need to prep it again before relining

  • Remove rocks, slate & plants

Everything around the edge has to come out first

  • Buy and install a new liner

New liner cost plus installation on top of all the above

The flash coat

EPDM liners only.

PondPro2000 is a single component catalyst-based product. For existing EPDM pond liners, you may consider a very light first coat — a flash coat that does NOT require purchasing additional product. This thin application allows the catalyst to force trapped air out of the membrane before the main coat seals over it. Without it, depending on the thickness of your EPDM membrane and overall age, some customers may see temporary swelling or bubbling; however, the product will self-level. If you choose not to apply the flash coat, there is no need to worry if the product has slight bubbling; it will self-level.

At temperatures above 55°F allow 24 hours for the flash coat to dry.

  1. Step 1 Min. 24 hrs cure before step 2

    Flash coat (very light pass)

    1.5 gal
    Per 200 sq ft max
    6–8 mil
    Thickness
    24 hrs
    Minimum dry time

Do not apply too thick — excess flash coat causes temporary bubbling. This thin pass is about letting the catalyst work, not about coverage.

  2. Step 2 After flash coat is fully dry

    Main coat (full coverage)

    3.5 gal
    Per 200 sq ft
    20 mil
    Thickness
    72 hrs
    Fill pond after

Distribute with a 3/8 inch nap roller on large flat surfaces. Use a paintbrush for vertical walls. Wait a full 72 hours at temps above 55°F before filling.

How it works

Application on pond liners.

  1. Single component

PondPro2000 is a single component product — the catalyst is already in the can. Mix with a drill mixer, not by hand, creating a visible vortex for 3–4 minutes.

  2. Coverage

About 36 square feet per gallon on an EPDM liner assuming you are applying the flash coat, otherwise 40 sq ft per gallon on a single coat.

  3. Set-up time

The material begins to set within 2–3 hours depending on daytime temperatures. If it rains 4 hours after application, the product has already waterproofed.

  4. Seams

Flatten any folds before coating. Apply butyl tape over seams before the main coat to ensure full seam integrity.

  5. Open it. Use it. Save the rest.

Once opened, it stays usable in the can — it doesn’t harden or cure inside the container. Properly seal the lid between sessions.

  6. PVC liners

PondPro2000 does not work on PVC liners.

The alternative fixes

Why patches and spray cans never last.

  • Patch and glue

As tapes and patches age, many times the adhesive will come loose, allowing water to get in and under, causing the same leak to occur.

  • Aerosol spray-on

A very short-term fix. Thin film, low adhesion, no warranty, and the application is inconsistent on vertical surfaces.

  • Expandable foam

Keeps the liner in place temporarily, but as the earth below changes due to water getting underneath, it forces the foam to move — bringing the leak back.

  • PondPro 2000

Catalyst-based liquid butyl rubber. During curing, the catalyst forces trapped air to the surface creating a chemical cross-link. Forms an airtight seamless membrane. 20-year warranty.
