Application instructions

Everything you need to prepare, mix, apply and cure PondPro 2000 correctly the first time.

Application is as easy as 1-2-3

Most disappointing repairs are due to one of these three being skipped.

  1. Rule 01

    Dry surface, No Chemicals

Soft bristle brush and water only. Detergent residue can harm fish and plants, and trapped moisture causes blistering later.

  2. Rule 02

    Caulk Joints And Cracks First

Use the MS Butyl caulk before coating. It is field tested to bond with PondPro and will not void the warranty.

  3. Rule 03

EPDM Liners Get A Flash Coat

Flash coat first — 1.5 gallons per 200 sq ft, 6–8 mil. Let it dry at least 24 hours, longer in cool or humid weather. Then apply the main coat at 20 mil. Coating over a flash coat that is not fully dry wrinkles it, and the wrinkles take longer to flatten and dry.

Preparing the surface, step by step

  1. Clean With Water Only

A soft bristle brush and water remove the dirt that would otherwise get picked up in the roller.

  2. Repair Tears And Remove Loose Material

Repair any tears or rips down the middle with Butyl tape first. Remove loose coatings with a scraper and wire brush.

  3. Strip Oil, Wax And Old Caulking

Remove oil or wax completely with mineral spirits. Any loose caulking must be removed and replaced with the MS Butyl caulk before you coat.

Mixing PondPro 2000

You will need a drill and a gallon or 5-gallon pail mixer attachment.

The product has a 5-year shelf life.
  • Move the drill up and down as well as in a circular motion, so the material distributes uniformly rather than just at the blade.
  • A visible vortex in the can is the sign you are mixing at the right speed.
  • PondPro Gallon Mixers and 5-gallon pail mixers are required to mix the product and are available on our website.

The Application Process

Brush and roller together is the most effective method. Roller for the large flat surfaces, brush for vertical walls and tight corners on smaller ponds.

  • Caulk before you coat

Every joint and crack gets caulked first with MS caulk before the PondPro 2000.

  • Pour in an S pattern

On large flat surfaces, pour the mixed material out in a figure S before spreading.

  • 3/8 inch roller

PondPro 2000 must be applied using a 3/8-inch nap roller specifically designed for use with solvent-based coatings.

  • Brush the verticals

Small ponds and vertical walls are more easily and evenly coated with a paintbrush.

For EPDM liners only

Flash Coat First, Then the Main Coat

Flash coat per approx. 200 sq ft, a very light coat of 6–8 mil
24 hrs
Minimum drying time for the flash coat before the main coat
Main coat
Apply PondPro 2000 at 20 mil

Apply a "flash coat" (a very light coat) at 1.5 gallons for approx. 200 sq ft, resulting in 6–8 mil. Then let the flash coat dry for at least 24 hours; cooler temperatures or high humidity may slow the cure. Then apply the main coat at a 20 mil thickness.

If the flash coat is not completely dry, it will cause wrinkling in the main coat. This extends the time needed for it to flatten out and dry.

Curing & temperature

What Happens After The Coat Goes On.

PondPro is a solvent-based coating unique to the industry. Rather than drying with air temperatures it chemically cross-links to the surface making them one and the same!

Cure Time By Temperature

If it drops below 55°F, add that lost time back onto your overall cure. Warmer always cures faster.

Do not apply if rain is expected within the waterproofing window, and do not refill the pond until the full 72 hours have passed with no rain.

Why it lasts so long.

PondPro was developed with a very unique chemistry. Its solvent allows for something very special to occur not found in other pond coatings; a chemical cross-link. This allows the product not to simply dry to the surface but literally chemically bond providing outstanding adhesion characteristics yet maintaining flexibility and ability to handle temperature swings.
